BACK INTO THE ARCHIVES... AT THE MONTAGU MUSIC COLLECTION
This autumn, after the excitement of our collaborative project with Buskaid in the summer, we are settling back into planning our new project for 2027! We know how much you all love Scottish Baroque music - and so, for the next couple of months, we're heading back to the archives to search for new Scottish stories to tell. Our first visit this summer was to the Montagu Music Collection at Boughton House - many thanks to the Duke of Buccleuch and Crispin at the archive for letting us explore this incredible and varied collection, which has a number of important volumes of Scottish music - and volumes which originated in Scotland.
We were delighted to find some amazing volumes of manuscript music, many compiled by women - and they're a real snapshot into their talent and dedication to musical learning. One of these was "Mrs Crockat's Music Book" - full of handwritten harpsichord and recorder music from the turn of the eighteenth century - but we have no idea who Mrs Crockat might have been! But that's part of the joy of the it - reimagining the past and sharing it with our audiences. That said, we are now embarking on a period of research to establish if anything further can be known about Mrs Crockat herself - wish us luck!
